G. Atwood fu un matematico di fama rilevante che visse tra il 1745 e il 1807.
Dopo essersi laureato nel 1769 alla Trinity College di Cambridge ne diventò borsista e tutore. Nel 1784 lasciò Cambridge e poco dopo ricevette da William Pitt il Giovane l'incarico di ricercatore dei brevetti delle dogane, permettendogli di dedicare una parte considerevole del suo tempo alla matematica e alla fisica.
Atwood fu anche un rinomato giocatore di scacchi, ed ebbe l'idea di trascrivere molte partite giocate da lui stesso e da altri lasciando così alle generazioni successive una preziosa documentazione storica.
Atwood inventò la macchina per dimostrare sperimentalmente le leggi del moto uniformemente accelerato.

G. Atwood was a prominent mathematician who lived between 1745 and 1807. After graduating in 1769 from Trinity College in Cambridge, he became a fellow and tutor. In 1784 he left Cambridge and shortly thereafter received the post of patent researcher at customs from William Pitt the Younger, allowing him to devote a considerable portion of his time to mathematics and physics.
Atwood was also a renowned chess player, and had the idea of transcribing many games played by himself and by others, thus leaving valuable historical documentation for subsequent generations.
Atwood invented the machine to demonstrate the laws of uniformly accelerated motion.
